The concept and first iteration of this sculpture (a temporary installation titled Formative, fabricated from plywood) was created during a 2021 residency at Fogo Island Arts. Now realized as a permanent 10-foot aluminum sculpture at St. John’s International Airport, First Sign greets travelers with shifting colours and geometric abstraction. Positioned at the airport’s Exit Plaza, it marks the first sign of home, that moment of arrival and departure, a contemporary threshold that reflects Newfoundland and Labrador’s landscape, architecture, and sense of place.
